I know it is difficult for differently enabled people to get jobs. On the other hand there is an inherent risk in hiring people with disabilities. We hired a young woman who was recovering from a serious brain injury several months ago. She’s an architect, and we thought we should give her a chance. After working for us for nearly 6 months evaluating facilities, she decided she was recovered sufficiently to go back to Texas and get back into architecture. Her work was okay, nothing outstanding, but usable. What we don’t understand, is that before she left, she deleted all the work she had in progress and had not finished. It’s like something misfired in her injured brain. Now we have to do all that work over. It’s embarrassing for the company to explain the issues to the client, problematic to get access to the buildings again, and costly for the us, because we can’t charge the client for our former employee’s mistake.

I have a neuropsychiatric ”disorder” – Aspergers syndrome. It’s very hard here in Sweden to even get a chance to have a job. I have never worked and made money.

I believe it is much that way everywhere. It’s really difficult for people with disabilities to find good employment.
There are companies in our area that hire people with a variety of disabilities, and offer services that their differently enabled staff can perform well. I have used one of these companies for printing, labeling and mailing large numbers of surveys, for example.
The times I have used this company the staff did a good job, however, the prices for their services are 20% higher than other companies that offer printing/mailing services. There are a couple of reasons for the higher cost: 1) the company’s turn around time is slower, because it takes their staff longer to perform their duties, and 2) they have to have extra staff to check the work for quality control.
If I have a job with a tight budget and the job needs to be done quickly, I can’t use the company with differently enabled staff.
